Ricky Carmichael came to Las Vegas looking to tie two records held by
Jeremy McGrath - most wins in a row during a season, and total wins for a
season.
Carmichael did win tonight's event to continue his total domination of
2001, and to tie those records. RC is now tied with Jeremy for most wins in
a row (13) and most wins in a season (14). Ricky started the main back in
fourth, but came thru as he has all season.
As a final note on Ricky, the rumor that just won't go away is that Ricky
is going to be riding 'red' next year - 'red' as in riding for American
Honda. Nothing official has been announced, so we'll just have to wait and
see!
Jeremy McGrath finished second tonight, and second in the overall series
championship. Will he be back next year? Some say 'yes', some say 'no'.
That's another item that we'll all have to wait and see on! Jeremy did seem
very confident and already looking forward to next year due to a totally
revamped set-up on his Mazda/Yamaha.
Tim Ferry finished third. Tim has been improving as the season has
progressed, and should be a very real threat for the outdoor championships
that start next weekend. He finished sixth in the final series point
standings.
The Dave Coombs Sr. 125 East/West shootout looked to be a stellar event
with all the top 125 riders competing against each other for the first time
this season.
When the checkered flag fell on the final lap, it was Nate Ramsey and his
Yamaha of Troy YZ 250 four-stroke that came out on top. Suzuki's East coast
champ Travis Pastrana finished second, with KTM's Brock Sellards third.
West coast champ Ernesto Fonseca held the lead in the main, but a fall
dropped him back to eighth at the finish.
NOTES: Heath Voss rode the new 2002 model Honda CR 450 four-stroke. Ezra
Lusk did not compete due to injury from a practice fall. Next weekend is
the start of the AMA/Chevy Trucks U. S. Motocross Series.

Fonseca clinches 125 West! Carmichael continues his win streak!
Tonight's race marked the first time a supercross has ever been held in
Salt Lake City. Coming into the event, only one championship was left to be
determined - the 125 West series. And the two primary contestants were
Ernesto Fonseca & Rodrig Thain.
Ernesto, on the Yamaha of Troy YZ 250 four-stroke, and Rodrig, on the Team
Suzuki RM 125 took center stage immediately. Thain won the first 125
qualifier, and then Fonseca followed by winning the second 125 qualifier.
However, in the final 125 West main of the season, Fonseca left little
doubt as to who would take the championship. He took command of the race
from lap one, and raced to the win and the series championship. It's
Ernesto's second supercross title of his career, as he also won the 125
East title in 1999. Ivan Tedesco finished second in the main on his Honda
CR 125. It's his best finish of the season. Justin Buckelew finished third
on the night, and he also takes third in the final point standings. Rodrig
Thain finished fifth in the main event, and that secured his second place
in the final point standings.
Ricky Carmichael won the 250 Main again. It was a four-way battle early on
between Ricky, Jeremy McGrath, Kevin Windham, and Tim Ferry. But Ricky
ultimately showed once again he's the 'boss' of 2001. As the race wore on,
he settled into the lead, and held it until the finish. It's his 12th win
in a row, and 13th win of the season. Ricky has an opportunity to tie two
records next week at the final event in Las Vegas. He can tie with Jeremy
McGrath for most victories in a row during a season (13) and most wins in a
season (14). Tim Ferry had a great showing tonight as he finished second on
the YZ 426 four-stroke. Tim's looking very confident as he gets more seat
time on the big thumper. Third place went to Mike LaRocco on the Honda CR
250.
NOTES: David Vuillemin returned to racing after a few weeks off due to a
broken collarbone. He finished fourth. Next week's 125 event is an
'East/West' shootout, with all the top riders competing against each other
for the first time this season.

Ricky Carmichael is the 2001 AMA/EA Sports Supercross Series Champion!
250 MAIN EVENT: Ricky Carmichael and his Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki dominated tonight's
racing - again. He clinched his first ever 250 supercross championship in style via his
12th win of the season, and 11th win in a row.
Ezra Lusk finished second. He had the lead early on, but settled into second once
Carmichael took command. Carmichael and Lusk had the crowd entertained for the first few
laps with their close racing.
Seven-time champion Jeremy McGrath finished third. He's second in the point standings.
125 MAIN EVENT: Grant Langston grabbed his and KTM's first ever supercross win in the 125
West Main Event. The 2000 125 World Motocross Champion from South Africa took the lead on
the first lap, and maintained it for all 15 laps.
Team Suzuki's rider from France Rodrig Thain finished second. He's still in the points
chase with one round left to go. He's second and 20 points behind series leader Ernesto
Fonseca.
Ernesto Fonseca finished third. He fell, and was back in the pack, but fought hard to come
up to third. He can wrap up the 125 West championship next week at the final West event in
Salt Lake City.
NOTES: Travis Pastrana raced in the 250 class. He fell in his qualifier and did not
compete after that. Privateer rider Erick Vallejo had a chance to ride for the Pro-Circuit
team because Shae Bentley and Casey Lytle are injured. Vallejo finished sixth in the 125
class.

Ricky Carmichael is getting closer to capturing the most prestigious title in off-road
motorcycling - the AMA/EA Sports Supercross Series championship. It would be Ricky's first
title in the premier class of supercross.
"R.C." won easily tonight. It marks his ninth win in a row, and tenth victory of
the season. He currently has a 39 point lead over second place Jeremy McGrath with only
four races to go. The only thing that can keep him away from the title now is a major
catastrophe.
Travis Pastrana won the 125 East Main after an exciting race with Nate Ramsey.
The early leader was Kelly Smith on the Red Bull KTM. Ramsey and his Yamaha of Troy YZ 250
four-stroke worked up to second, and Travis Pastrana overcame a poor start to make his way
to third. Then both Ramsey and Pastrana went past Smith to take over the first and second
positions.
All eyes were on the Ramsey/Pastrana pair, and anticipating a close race to the finish.
They did not disappoint. On the last lap, Pastrana passed Ramsey to take a very exciting
win!
Travis could be closing in on his first supercross championship too. He leads Ramsey by 11
points in the 125 East Series.

NOTES: Travis Pastrana also qualified for the 250 Main by finishing second behind McGrath
in their heat. Travis decided not to race the 250 Main because of the tough battle in the
125 event. David Vuillemin and Stephane Roncada were not able to race tonight because of
previous injuries. Sebastien Tortelli was not able to compete either, as he injured his
leg in practice. Mike LaRocco had a flat front tire in the 250 Main, and finished last.
Questions remain for Jeremy McGrath: Can he turn around what for him is a poor season?
Will he ride outdoor motocross if he doesn't win the supercross title? And what are his
plans for 2002?

Is it supposed to be this easy?
For the fourth time in six events, Ricky Carmichael emerges as the winner on his Team
Chevy Trucks/Kawasaki KX 250. For the 20 lap Main Event, Ricky checked out. He grabbed the
start and was gone. See ya' later. Hasta la vista. Bye bye. No contest. Ricky's got a lot
of confidence right now, and a six point lead over Jeremy McGrath in the series point
standings.
Jeremy McGrath finished second. Most people would be really happy with second. But with
Jeremy's status and records, most people look at second place as disappointing. But don't
count Jeremy out. It's a long season, and he's only behind Carmichael by six points.
Travis Pastrana returned to racing tonight in round 1 of the 125 East series. He won. He's
popular. Everyone loves him. And he's only 17!
